Recently I have been looking back to various beverages I enjoyed as a young boy, including the likes of Dandelion and Burdock, and rediscovered the wonders of Sarsaparilla Root.
Just the thought of having a warm glass of this amazing root back when I was a child gave me incredible sensory memories and made me salivate with joy so I ordered some organic Sarsaparilla Root, relived that moment, and then dived into reading about its wonderful benefits to share with you all here.
Found in understories of mixed or deciduous forests, this powerful natural root prefers soils that are moist and rich in nutrients in the US and Canada and comes power-packed with goodness and a mellow, sweet flavour that has hints of vanilla.
Sarsaparilla Root contains antioxidants called Saponins that help protect the body against cellular damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals. Antioxidants are essential for overall health and protection against chronic diseases protecting us from colds and flu so this is a beneficial attribute for us from the off.
Saponins have also shown anti-inflammatory effects so it could also potentially benefit individuals with inflammatory conditions too.
The root contains flavonoids such as Quercetin, which is a more powerful antioxidant than vitamin C, E, or beta carotene. When Quercetin is taken with Zinc, however, it pushes Zinc into our cells which is crucial for immune system boosts when we do go down with the lurgy. Another key flavonoid present is Kaempferol, which could assist people who want to shift excess weight and also boasts anticancer properties.
Sarsaparilla is commonly used in traditional medicine for its potential beneficial effects on skin conditions such as eczema, rashes, pruritus, and wounds. It is believed to have antifungal properties too, making it useful for soothing skin irritations.
It supports digestive health, so may be able to help regulate bowel function and relieve symptoms of upset stomach and nausea.
Phytosterols found in the root of Sarsaparilla have also been documented to assist with high cholesterol levels too. And finally, there are traces of vitamins A, C, and several B vitamins alongside key minerals such as Iron, Copper, Zinc, and Manganese making it an all-round winner, and another naturally-grown key player for our overall well-being.
To prepare it, simply infuse the organic roots in hot water to form a super-tasty tea. In my opinion, it's up there taste-wise with the dual-extracted Chaga Mushroom in our shop.
Order some for your natural remedy stash and relive a wondrous memory from the good old days!
